David Dylan Jessurun: Newsletter 23-11-2009

Web users are web-builders

Newsletter 23-11-2009

Dear friend,

Well, it’s been a very busy week. No matter how much of a fan I am of Ubuntu, I must say; the LAMP install… don’t do it, unless you really enjoy chown, chmod and su. Their user/root scheme is strange, to say the least. I had hopes the server install would be different, but no such luck.

I felt like I was neglecting all you developers out there. So, sorry marketing friends, this week it’s all about design and code. But do look at the article about those nasty, lying, customers. It’s relevant to all of us across the scale.

Please do pass on this newsletter. And if you got this from a friend, one E-mail to daviddylan@defcon0.com and you too can enjoy this newsletter fresh and warm in your in-box every Monday.

I hope you had a great weekend, I sure had.

Happy web-building!

Padding the Margin

When developing websites, people tend to try and bend the browser to their will. They are fighting the tool rather than working with it. Part of this phenomenon stems from not getting to grips with the power of the box model, most notably Margin and Padding.

Motor impaired users

The unique requirements for motor impaired web users can often be overlooked or poorly implemented. Motor impairments can be caused by a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a physical disability or even a broken arm.

Customers lie

Customers, users, clients; call them what you will, they lie. They may not be intending to, and only a few may actually be trying to swindle you, but they do. Ask a user about your site or product and he/she’ll lie to you. Ask a client about their long-term goals with a project and they’ll tell you a blatant untruth. We live in a society where honesty is prized as one of the highest virtues yet other things are prized even more, like saving face, fitting in and being nice.
