David Dylan Jessurun: Soul Sound Formations

Web users are web-builders

Soul Sound Formations

Role: Design, functional design, HTML/CSS, implementation, customisations to WordPress.

A website for black gospel choir Soul Sound Formations. When their webmaster left suddenly and without handing over her work, passwords, and so on, SSF turned to me for emergency management since I had done the front-end design for their site. I came to the conclusion that the best way forward was to rush delivery on the new front-end I was already doing for them and base the whole on WordPress so they could do maintenance themselves. This was a rush job and also had to be done to quite high standards, as a portion of the SSF membership is non-sighted. I set up WordPress, built the templates and implemented them. I also added some PHP additions to provide functionality which WordPress does not natively offer.

Accomplishments: Non-sighted users indicate that they find the site comfortable to use. The entire project was finished in under two weeks.

Please note: This site was built in under two weeks while I was employed full-time, meaning; after work. I do not maintain this site. Please take note of what I explained above; no source material, no passwords, etc. This site was disaster-management.

Despite that there are a few features I’m happy with:

  • The menu items’ styling alternates. This requires no human intervention when an item is added. This was done with custom PHP to query the WP database and build the menu. (Not a plugin.)
  • At delivery, the HTML and CSS validated, regardless of WordPress’ propensity to make this as hard for you as it can.
  • Non-sighted users report that the site is comfortable to use, again, despite of WordPress.
